Our team at QAwerk recently conducted a Bug Crawl on the Chatter version for Android, analyzing its performance and user experience. We invite our readers to explore our findings.

Audio from ‘Live rooms’ does not stop even if you close app

Severity:

Critical

Precondition:

Sign in to ‘Chatter’.

Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Navigate to ‘Live now’.
  2. Join the room.
  3. Close the app.
Environment:

OS: Android 15
Device: Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Actual Result:

The audio continues to play; minimizing or closing the app does not stop it.

Expected Result:

The audio stops playing once the app is closed.

Audio from ‘Live rooms’ does not stop when incoming call is received

Precondition:

Sign in to ‘Chatter’.

Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Navigate to ‘Live now’.
  2. Join the room.
  3. Receive an incoming call.
Environment:

OS: Android 15
Device: Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

Actual Result:

The audio continues to play.

Expected Result:

The audio should stop playing. After the call ends, it should continue playing using the previously selected channel (speakers or Bluetooth headphones, for example).

“Start Room” button is still available for 30 minutes after scheduled time

Severity:

Precondition:

Sign in to ‘Chatter’.

Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Tap the “+” button in the bottom navigation bar.
  2. Tap “Schedule a room”.
  3. Add all necessary info.
  4. Wait for 30+ minutes.
  5. Navigate to your profile or the group in which the room is scheduled.

Actual Result:

The ‘Start room’ button is still available.

Expected Result:

The ‘Start room’ button should be available 30 minutes before or after the scheduled time. For example, if you scheduled the room for 5 pm, you will be able to start the room anytime between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm.

“Request to join” button is enabled for User1 Group when another user has requested to join this Group

Precondition:
  1. Sign in to ‘Chatter’
  2. User1 and User2 are existing users.
  3. Log in with User1.
Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Create or ensure that User1 has their own Group.
  2. Log out.
  3. Log in with User2.
  4. Find the User1 Group.
  5. Tap ‘Request to join’.
  6. Log out.
  7. Log in with User1.
  8. Navigate to User1’s Groups.
  9. Observe the list of Groups.

Actual Result:

The ‘Request to join’ button is enabled for User1’s Group.

Expected Result:

The ‘Request to join button should not be available, because User1 is the owner of this group and is already in this group.

Feedback and Support menus are not enabled

Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Navigate to ‘Settings’.
  2. Tap ‘Feedback and Support’.

‘Shake phone to report bugs or contact support’ feature is not working

Precondition:

Sign in to ‘Chatter’.

Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Navigate to ‘Settings’.
  2. Tap ‘Feedback and Support’.
  3. Enable the ‘Shake phone to report bugs or contact support’ feature by tapping the toggle button.
  4. Shake the phone.

The ‘Feedback or contact support’ menu is not opened.

  1. Navigate to the ‘Profile’ menu.
  2. Tap on ‘Create your first post’.

The ‘Create a post’ menu is not opened.

Expected Result:

The ‘Create a post’ menu is opened.

‘Username’ is too long and does not fit in menu

Severity:

Precondition:

Sign in to ‘Chatter’.

Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Navigate to the ‘Search’ menu.
  2. Tap on ‘People’.
  3. Find a person with a username that is longer than 13 symbols (e.g. advocate4education).
  4. Tap on it.
  5. Tap on the three dots menu in the upper-right corner.

The ‘Username’ is too long and does not fit in the menu.

Expected Result:

The ‘Username’ should be adjusted to fit within the confines of the menu, irrespective of length.

Incorrect behavior of dropdown menu on Main screen

Severity:

Minor

Precondition:

Sign in to ‘Chatter’.

Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Navigate to the ‘Discover’ menu.
  2. Tap on ‘Group’.
  3. Find a group and join (e.g. Group1).
  4. Navigate to the ‘Home’ screen and select the group from the dropdown menu.
  5. Navigate to the ‘Groups’ tab and leave the group.
  6. Navigate to the ‘Home’ screen and refresh the screen.

Actual Result:

The group (for example, Group1) remains selected on the dropdown menu even after the user has left the group.

Expected Result:

The default option ‘For You’ should be selected on the dropdown menu after the user leaves a group.

Incorrect behavior of Search field on Discover screen

Severity:

Trivial

Precondition:

Sign in to ‘Chatter’.

Steps to Reproduce:
  1. Navigate to the ‘Discover’ menu.
  2. Search for something (e.g. Name1).
  3. Navigate to the ‘Home’ screen.
  4. Navigate to the ‘Groups’ tab.
  5. Navigate to the ‘Discover’ menu.
  6. The previous search option is still displayed in the “Search” field.
Environment:

OS: Android 15

Actual Result:

The previous search option is still displayed in the “Search” field but the results are not filtered.

Expected Result:

The ‘Search’ field should be cleared when a user navigates away from the ‘Discover’ screen.

Chatter performs well and features a strong, modern design. The main functional issue affecting user experience is audio that fails to stop upon app closure or when receiving a call. Resolving these critical bugs, along with minor UI inconsistencies, will significantly improve the app's overall appeal.
