Bugs Found in Grain SaaS

Grain is a digital platform that specializes in note-taking. It lets users capture meetings and process them with various AI agents. The app is easy to set up, and it connects with all popular AI agents. It can boost team productivity for various departments, including sales, recruiting, and user research.
Our team at QAwerk has conducted an extensive bug crawl of the Grain desktop app and website. We were impressed with the functionality that is simple but very effective. Core flows all hold up to scrutiny, but we did discover a few issues, mainly with field validation and unclear messaging. We invite you to explore our findings and analysis.
Buttons stop responding after opening ‘Edit Template’ from ‘Customize Summary’ modal on recorded meeting page
Critical
- The Grain desktop app is installed, and the user is logged in.
- The user has at least one recorded meeting.
- Open the Grain desktop app.
- Navigate to ‘Meetings’ and open any recorded meeting.
- On the ‘Summary’ tab, click the ‘+ Add custom template’ button.
- In the ‘Customize Summary’ modal, expand the ‘Sections’ dropdown of any template (e.g., ‘Sales Discovery’).
- Click the ‘Edit Template’ option.
- On the template editing page, click the buttons (‘Cancel’, ‘Back to app’, etc.).
Operating System: Windows 10
Application: Grain Desktop 2026.36.2.0
After opening the template editing page, the buttons fail to respond to clicks. When the user navigates back to the meeting page, the title still displays ‘Workspace settings’, and the sidebar navigation (‘Meetings’) and the ‘Ask anything’ input also become unresponsive.
All buttons located on the template editing page should work as intended, with the ‘Cancel’/‘Back to app’ buttons taking the user back to the meeting page while the application remains fully functional.
‘Preferred name updated’ success toast is shown when trying to save very long name, but that name is not saved and reverts to previous value
Major
- The Grain desktop app is installed, and the user is logged in.
- Several paragraphs of Lorem Ipsum text are copied to the clipboard.
- Open the Grain desktop app.
- Navigate to ‘Account settings’ and select the ‘Profile’ option.
- Clear the ‘Preferred Name’ field and paste the long Lorem Ipsum text.
- Click outside the field to save the newly entered value.
- Reopen the ‘Profile’ page or restart the application.
Operating System: Windows 10
Application: Grain Desktop 2026.36.2.0
A ‘Preferred name updated’ success toast appears, and the field shows the Lorem Ipsum text. On some attempts, an ‘An error occurred’ toast appears right after the success toast. After reopening the page, the name has reverted to the previous value (‘Stanislav Chalapko’), so the change was not saved.
The success toast should appear only when the name is actually saved. If the name is too long, a clear validation message should be shown (e.g., ‘Name must be no longer than N characters’), and no success toast should appear. Alternatively, the input field should limit the number of characters users can enter.
Tag with special characters is not created, and no error message is shown
Minor
- The Grain desktop app is installed, and the user is logged in.
- The user has at least one recorded meeting.
- Open the Grain desktop app.
- Access any recorded meeting.
- Click the ‘⋮’ (additional actions) menu located in the top right corner and select ‘Add tags’.
- Click the ‘Add Tag’ option and enter a tag name comprised solely of special characters (e.g., !”№).
- Click ‘Create new tag ‘!’№’’ in the dropdown menu.
Operating System: Windows 10
Application: Grain Desktop 2026.36.2.0
The tag is not created. The input field is cleared, but no error or notification appears, leaving the user unsure why the tag was not added.
The system should provide a clear validation message explaining that the tag names cannot include special characters (e.g., ‘Tag name can only contain letters, numbers, and hyphens’). Alternatively, the system should not offer the ‘Create new tag’ option for invalid inputs.
Generic ‘An error occurred’ error message is shown when saving very long playlist title
Minor
- The Grain desktop app is installed, and the user is logged in.
- The user has at least one playlist available.
- A long text, such as several paragraphs of Lorem Ipsum, is copied to the clipboard.
- Open the Grain desktop app.
- Navigate to ‘Playlists’ and select any playlist.
- Click any playlist title to edit it.
- Paste the long text copied earlier into the title field.
- Click outside the title field to save the changes.
Operating System: Windows 10
Application: Grain Desktop 2026.36.2.0
The title is not saved, and a toast notification appears with a generic ‘An error occurred’ error message that does not specify the cause. Additionally, the pasted text overflows the page header, overlapping the breadcrumbs and the ‘Share’/‘Add’ buttons.
A clear validation message should be displayed specifying that the title length has exceeded the maximum limit and indicating the maximum allowed length (e.g., ‘Title length should not exceed ‘N’ characters’). Alternatively, a character limit should be set on the input field.
Windows icon is not displayed on ‘Download for Windows’ button in ‘Try Grain today’ section on Grain home page
Minor
Open any web browser.
- Navigate to the Grain home page (https://grain.com).
- Scroll down to the ‘Try Grain Today. It’s Free Forever.’ section.
- Observe the ‘Download for Windows’ button.
Operating System: Windows 10
Chrome 150.0.7871.129
The Windows icon on the ‘Download for Windows’ button is not loading. Instead, there is a blank white square.
The Windows logo icon should be correctly displayed on the ‘Download for Windows’ button.
‘Auto delete’ field does not fully display 4-digit values
Minor
The Grain desktop app is installed, and the user is logged in.
- Open the Grain desktop app.
- Navigate to ‘Workspace settings’ → ‘General’.
- Scroll down to the ‘Auto delete’ section.
- Enter ‘1500’ into the ‘Auto-delete meetings in the workspace ___ day(s) after they’re created’ field.
- Click outside the field to save the value.
Operating System: Windows 10
Application: Grain Desktop 2026.36.2.0
Although the value is saved successfully (as indicated by the ‘Workspace updated’ toast), the field is too narrow. The last digit is cut off, so ‘150’ is displayed instead of the intended ‘1500’.
The field should be adequate in size to display any permitted value fully or should resize to accommodate the entered value.
Uploading 18 MB profile picture triggers generic ‘Upload Failed: Unknown error’ message
Minor
- The Grain desktop app is installed, and the user is logged in.
- An image file of size approximately 18 MB must be available on the computer.
- Open the Grain desktop app.
- Navigate to ‘Account Settings’ → ‘Profile’.
- Click the ‘Change’ button adjacent to ‘Profile Picture’.
- Click the ‘Choose an Image File’ button and select the 18 MB image.
- Click the ‘Save Image’ button.
Operating System: Windows 10
Application: Grain Desktop 2026.36.2.0
A loading spinner appears on the ‘Save Image’ button, and then an ‘Upload Failed’ modal appears with the message ‘Unknown error, please refresh and try again.’ It does not say that the file is too large or what the maximum allowed size is.
The app should validate the file size, ideally right after the file is selected, and show a clear message such as ‘File is too large. Maximum size is N MB.’
Generic ‘An error occurred’ error message is shown when entering too-large value (9999) in ‘Auto delete’ days field
Minor
The Grain desktop app is installed, and the user is logged in.
- Open the Grain desktop app.
- Navigate to ‘Workspace settings’ → ‘General’.
- Scroll down to the ‘Auto delete’ section.
- Enter ‘9999’ into the ‘Auto-delete meetings in the workspace ___ day(s) after they’re created’ field.
- Click outside the field to save the value.
Operating System: Windows 10
Application: Grain Desktop 2026.36.2.0
The value is not saved, and a toast appears with the generic message ‘An error occurred’. It does not say that the number is too large or what the allowed range is.
A clear validation message should explain that the value is too large and state the allowed range (e.g., ‘Value must be between 1 and N days’). Alternatively, the input field should limit the maximum value that can be entered.
While testing Grain (website and Windows desktop app), we identified several bugs. The most common issue is weak input validation: long text, large numbers, big files, and special characters either produce a generic error message,
fail silently, or show a false success notification. I recommend running comprehensive UI testing to find
and fix such issues.
